Thousands of Plymouth Argyle fans will be travelling to Wembley Stadium on Monday for the League Two play-off final against AFC Wimbledon (ko 3pm).
This will be Argyle’s second visit to Wembley. In 1996, the Pilgrims beat Darlington 1-0 in a play-off final to gain promotion.
Ronnie Mauge, who scored the winner that day, is hoping another Argyle player will very shortly lay claim to the same achievement on the hallowed turf.
Ronnie, who is now 47, said: ‘It’s been 20 years – it’s time for a new Wembley hero. I’ve enjoyed the adulation and I am grateful for the support from the Green Army, but I’ve had my time – records are there to be broken.’
Ronnie and his team-mates, managed by Neil Warnock, were watched by around 33,000 Argyle fans – this time round, he will be among an even higher number of Pilgrims supporters in the east end of the stadium.
The crowd is likely to number more than 50,000 with Wimbledon taking around 17,000 supporters.
Fans in Cornwall will be making very early starts on bank holiday Monday. Coaches will be leaving towns in the east of the county between 5.55am and 6.35am.
