Plymouth Argyle boss Derek Adams will urge his newly-promoted side to try to catch League Two leaders Doncaster Rovers in the final three games of the season, writes Ross Reid.

Adams’ Argyle clinched the club’s first promotion in 13 years by sweeping to a 6-1 home win over relegation haunted Newport while Doncaster lost 1-0 at home to Blackpool on a glorious, sun-blessed Easter Monday.

Straight after the win, Adams was adamant: ‘We want to enjoy this moment and winning promotion but results went our way and we must aim to close the three point gap on Doncaster.

‘I am not saying we will catch them but we have three games to try.’

On-loan Cardiff City winger Matty Kennedy (2), forward Jake Jervis (2), playmaker Graham Carey and target man Ryan Taylor scored for Argyle, who led 2-0 at half-time against the Exiles.

Tomorrow, Argyle and Doncaster face tough away days.

The Greens visit 10th placed Colchester while Rovers are at United’s play-off chasing rivals Wycombe, one of 10 teams – from fourth down – with a realistic pre-game chance of finishing in the top seven.

Adams says he will talk about next season at the end of this one, but was still happy to point out: ‘To get this football club back into League One was my priority when I joined the football club just under two years ago.

‘We have had really successful times, a play-off final, a good FA Cup run this season and now a promotion.

‘The players, the staff, the supporters, everyone at this football club wanted it and we’ve all delivered. There was a lot of pressure on us and the players have dealt with it well.’
