Plymouth Argyle take on Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League title-chasing Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday (1.30pm kick-off), writes Ross Reid.
There is set to be another Green Army exodus – 8,633 tickets have been snapped up – to one of the country’s most famous football grounds for an FA Cup third round tie that is set to be an always welcome money-spinner for the League Two club.
It also gives Argyle’s promotion-chasing players a rare chance to play on a bigger stage, and against one of the most attractive football playing teams in Europe, let alone the domestic game.
The beauty of the FA Cup at this weekend’s round three stage is that it gives Football League sides the chance to play true giants of the game. Liverpool versus Plymouth Argyle – read that out loud – comes along as often as a blue moon.
How will Argyle fare on the big stage?
All Pilgrims fans – especially those spending a weekend in Liverpool (and many are) – will be hoping the Greens do much better than last season’s disappointing end of season play-off final at Wembley.
However, the cup tie has to be put into perspective. High-flying Liverpool are in with a realistic chance of winning the Premier League, Derek Adams’ Pilgrims are trying to edge out of the Football League basement.
Graham Carey should love spreading the ball around at Anfield, showing off his undoubted skills.
Every Argyle player should relish the opportunity to test their ability against some of the best players in the game.
Unlike last season’s play-off final, Adams’ Greens are not shackled by a favourites tag.
Liverpool will be odds-on to sweep past the Pilgrims. Therefore as underdogs – and on this occasion there is no argument – Argyle can relax, do their best and see what happens next . . . It’s the proverbial ’nothing to lose, everything to gain’ situation.
