Argyle will play Premiership giants Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, January 8, writes Ross Reid.

The money-spinning trip to one of the world’s most famous football homes was secured by Graham Carey’s extra time penalty winner in the Greens’ scrappy but ultimately rewarding 1-0 replay victory at Newport.

Derek Adams’ Pilgrims will now celebrate the festive season on top of the League Two Christmas tree and with a lucrative trip to Liverpool in the bag. The misery of losing at Wembley in last season’s play-off final is now a distant memory.

Argyle’s Liverpool cup date means that the Pilgrims’ fixtured League Two match at Plymothian Darren Way’s Yeovil Town on Saturday January 7 will now be rescheduled.

It also makes it even more important that Argyle’s next League Two match – at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Boxing Day – is not until Monday.

In other words, after a sapping long, drawn-out midweek cup tie at Rodney Parade, Argyle’s players have some (more) extra time to recover thanks to a Saturday off this weekend.

Monday’s match against Wycombe at Home Park (3pm) promises to be a post-Christmas cracker.

It’s important to build on the cup success especially as Argyle have back to back home games over the festive season with Crawley Town in town a week tomorrow (3pm), on Saturday, December 31.

Argyle fans, enjoy your Christmas Day: there won’t be many when you can celebrate your team being top of the league and facing a cup trip to Liverpool. Merry Christmas!
