Plymouth Argyle will face League Two rivals Newport County in the FA cup second round at Home Park on Saturday, December 3, writes Ross Reid.
Unlike Argyle – who won 2-1 at Mansfield Town at the first time of asking – County required a replay (and extra time) to overcome stubborn National League North Alfreton Town 4-1.
County’s three-goal extra time salvo at Rodney Parade on Tuesday evening wiped out any chance of Alfreton boss and former Argyle defender Nicky Law returning to Home Park in the Cup.
Argyle have already beaten Newport 3-1 away in the league, in mid-October, but will be wary of a bottom of the league side starting to make steady progress under new manager Graham Westley and seeking revenge.
Besides it’s the cup and as managers are so fond of telling us ’anything can happen in the cup’ when ’league form goes out the window’.
It is the league that Argyle boss Derek Adams will be concentrating on tomorrow as the leaders bid to extend their magnificent Sky Bet League Two run to 15 unbeaten at the expense of Home Park visitors Grimsby Town.
Adams’ Argyle have already opened up a seven-point lead over second placed Carlisle United, who suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at Newport last Saturday.
