Plymouth Argyle are back on Home Park soil today when Colchester United provide the opposition – but it is their away form which is driving their bid for promotion from League Two this season, writes Kevin Marriott.

The Pilgrims are proving to be excellent travellers, with last Saturday’s 3-1 win at struggling Newport County the latest in a run of away successes.

It seems a long time since Derek Adams’ team slumped 1-0 at Carlisle, the last time they returned to the South West empty-handed from an away game in the league.

It is now six successive away wins since that long trip, averaging two goals a game on opposition grounds.

And helping them along their way are the Green Army, who continue to travel the country in large numbers to follow their team.

At Newport last weekend, more than 1,000 fans backed the Greens, making up almost a third of the entire attendance of 3,416.

And in their previous two away games, at Stevenage (904) and Leyton Orient (918), the team were given great backing by their supporters.

Argyle coach Paul Wotton was asked this week what the secret is behind the club’s excellent start to the campaign and while saying there wasn’t one, he said the level of support at away games was a definite advantage.

Another key factor in Argyle’s rise to the top of the table has been the ability to name a reasonably settled side because of the lack of injuries.

Victory today would surely clinch the October Manager of the Month award for Adams. It would mean the Pilgrims had gone through the month unbeaten in the league, holding on to top spot in the process. Anybody still remember Carlisle away on August 13?
