Plymouth Argyle’s 2-2 draw with Portsmouth last weekend may have been the 100th Dockyard derby – and quite possibly in the top five for entertainment and excitement, writes Ross Reid.
There were few arguments that the pulsating draw was the top game seen at Home Park this season.
End to end is never a cliché sports editors like to see nor journalists use. There was no other way to describe this clash of the unbeaten leaders against the best side to play at Home Park this season so far.
This felt like two of the division’s promotion contenders – heavyweights – going blow for blow with each other. The result? A cracking encounter.
Yann Songo’o went full length at the near post to convert Graham Carey’s free kick with the deftest of headed finishes. Kyle Bennett – singled out by Argyle boss Derek Adams post-match – levelled by roofing home before halftime. Carey smashed a beauty off the bar after gliding past a couple of Pompey defenders on the edge of the box before Danny Rose’s 25-yard screamer, in off the underside of the bar on 87 minutes, appeared to have spectacularly won the game for Paul Cook’s Pompey.
However, Argyle super sub Connor Smith had other ideas and rifled in an 89th minute leveller to extend Plymouth’s unbeaten league run to 11 matches, the Pilgrims’ best league run since 2001-02.
The game also marked another Pilgrim’s progress. David Fox was outstanding throughout and continues to impress match-on-match in Argyle’s engine room.
Small wonder. It was only four years ago the 32- year-old helped Norwich City win promotion to the Premier League.
