Saltash United 1 Launceston 1

Saltash had to settle for a point against impressive Launceston at Kimberley Stadium on Wednesday night after playing most of the second half with only 10 men.

The Ashes, third in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League’s premier division, had left back Callum Martindale sent off in the 50th minute for violent conduct.

With the game nicely poised at 1-1, Martindale’s red card lifted the visitors and they had several chances to win the game.

But Saltash, courtesy of striker Sam Hughes, also had their opportunities and in the end the match could have gone either way.

Launceston had started the game well and they swept into a 12th minute lead when Tom Saviger’s superb low cross from the right wing was driven into the net by Jordan Hogan.

Saltash looked out of sorts and edgy at the back throughout the half but they continued to work hard and equalized three minutes before the break when Hughes finished off after a sweeping move along the right involving Ryan Richards and Richard Maddison.

The Ashes would have been hoping to go on to dominate in the second half, but Martindale’s dismissal meant that was not possible.
