Western League Premier Division preview – Saturday, October 3

NEWQUAY face a major test of their credentials tomorrow when Bridgwater arrive at Mount Wise.

Shaun Middleton’s side go into the clash on the back of three straight wins, having beaten Street and Wellington in their last two league outings, before dumping Penzance out of the Cornwall Senior Cup on Tuesday evening.

However, Bridgwater will provide a sterner examination as the Peppermints look to maintain their momentum and strengthen their position in the race for the play-offs.

The well-backed Robins sit top of the table, but have dropped seven points, including a couple in an entertaining 2-2 draw between the two back in August. And with a large crowd expected, the Cornish club will hope to make home advantage count.

Elsewhere, unbeaten St Blazey might have dropped to sixth following three straight draws, however they will start as heavy favourites at winless Wellington.

The Green and Blacks head to Somerset with five wins from their nine games, including an impressive 1-1 draw with leaders Bridgwater United, but need to start converting their chances if they are to keep pace.

They face a Welly side who have lost all 10 games and already have a goal difference of minus 54.

Liskeard haven’t played in the league since a 2-1 victory at Wells City 13 days ago, but head into their clash at Buckland Athletic full of confidence having ousted neighbours Saltash United from the Cornwall Senior Cup on Tuesday night on penalties.

The Yellows sit eighth having won five and lost the same number of their fixtures, and were surprisingly beaten by visiting Tavistock on Wednesday night.

Saltash threw away a lead at home to Sidmouth Town last Saturday before their midweek heartache. The ninth-placed Ashes resume their own play-off quest at Shepton Mallet who will leapfrog them with a victory.

Ever-improving Torpoint Athletic take a break from league action due to the division having 19 teams.

The Point, who saw off Wendron United 4-0 in midweek in the Cornwall Senior Cup, return to action on Tuesday night when Buckland Athletic are the visitors to The Mill.

Fixtures (3pm): Bovey Tracey v Street, Brixham v Wells City, Buckland Athletic v Liskeard Athletic, Ivybridge Town v Clevedon Town, Newquay v Bridgwater United, Portishead Town v Tavistock, Shepton Mallet v Saltash United, Sidmouth Town v Brislington, Wellington v St Blazey.
