Liskeard Athletic 2 Illogan RBL 3 (aet)

James Lorenz notched his 50th and 51st goals of the season but it was not enough to prevent a heartbreaking last minute extra time defeat for Liskeard in a dramatic Cornwall Charity Cup semi-final at St Austell’s Poltair Park on Wednesday night.

Lorenz struck in the 58th minute to cancel out Illogan’s opener from an Anton Oliver penalty a minute earlier, and the Liskeard goal machine fired the Blues into the lead five minutes from time.

It looked like it would be enough to send Liskeard into the final against St Dennis, but in the second minute of time added on Jason Roberts forced in an equaliser from a scramble after Liskeard goalkeeper Jamie Blatchford had tipped a corner onto the bar.

Liskeard’s players were incensed by a decision from a linesman just before the goal when a throw-in was given to Illogan despite the ball clearly being kicked out by an Illogan player.

Extra time was a feisty affair, with tempers barely under control, and there were decent chances for both sides, with Blatchford forced to make one superb save, while Liskeard substitute Ben Waters drove a shot inches wide after a smart move with Lorenz.

As the tie moved into the 119th minute, Illogan snatched a dramatic winner when a free kick appeared to be fumbled over the line by Blatchford, although Steve Abbott-Smith was close by and was claiming a touch.

There were wild celebrations from Illogan at the final whistle as Liskeard trooped off hoping that this physical encounter will not have an impact on their division one west title run-in.
