Saltash United 4
Plymouth Parkway 3
The Ashes earned a third round tie at Cullompton Rangers on Tuesday, November 17, with this cracking victory over their cross Tamar visitors when they recovered three times from going behind.
In an even first half Mike Smith headed past goalkeeper Brice Shields to give Parkway a 34th minute lead. Saltash were unfortunate not to draw level four minutes later when, after Dave Trott had been fouled, Chris Menhenick’s free kick struck a post.
The Ashes’ hard work eventually resulted in them drawing level five minutes before half-time when Joe Carey found Richard Maddison whose cross was bundled in by Sam Farrant.
The second half was as hectic as the first when, six minutes in, Smith broke through the home defence to net his second goal. Saltash responded within two minutes when, after Maddison was fouled, Menhenick had better luck this time by firing in the free kick.
With less than 20 minutes remaining substitute Levi Landricombe gave Parkway a 3-2 lead. Not to be outdone Saltash poured forward and drew level when Maddison’s cross was turned in by former Parkway striker Sam Hughes, with the victory being secured by Farrant.
Liskeard Athletic 1
Brixham 0
A Nick Aplin goal saw the Blues to this victory after being given a run for their money by their Devon visitors. The visitors, who had knocked Plymouth Argyle out of the competition in the last round, were stunned when after just 90 seconds Aplin broke through the visitors’ defence before providing a clinical finish to give Liskeard the early lead.
The visitors proved stern opponents and often had Liskeard on the back foot and but for goalkeeper Adam Fuller, who stood in for Jamie Blatchford, they could have conceded an equalising goal. But the home side’s solid defence held firm and with the busy Jack Bartlett in good form they held on to record their first clean sheet of the season and a home third round tie against cup holders Godolphin Atlantic on Tuesday, November 17.
