Rowett Insurance League Cup Second Round

Torpoint Athletic 5

Tavistock 4 (AET)

Torpoint avenged last season’s cup final defeat against Tavistock in spectacular fashion at ’The Mill when they finally overcame their Devon opponents through two Ben Walters extra time goals.

It did not get off to the best start as within a minute a surging run by wing James Phelps led to Jack Crago sweeping his team into the lead. Torpoint found difficulty in keeping tabs on first team striker Crago as Tavistock looked the more likely to score.

Undeterred Torpoint struck back in the second half through Curtis Damerell. Unfortunately, the lively Crago continued to cause problems and with 10 minutes remaining he completed his hat-trick to give Tavistock a 3-1 lead. But Torpoint deservedly sent the game into extra time through goals from Baros Hassan Zad and Dan Chapman.

In extra time a repeat of the first goal saw a Phelps run and cross converted by Crago to regain the lead. It looked all over for Point when player manager Karl Curtis was red-carded but they were in no mood to give up their cup hopes and Ben Walters drew the teams level. With the lottery of penalty kicks looming Walters popped up to head in the winner to earn a quarter-final home tie against St Blazey.
