St Blazey 0 Millbrook 2

Millbrook took a significant step towards clinching promotion from division one west of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League on Monday night with victory at Blaise Park.

Two goals from man of the match Jake Foster were enough to secure another three points and to keep them in second place. Leaders Ludgvan, who beat Wendron 6-0 on Monday to remain two points clear, are not seeking promotion.

So if Mackenzie Brown’s side win two of their last three games they cannot be caught by the chasing pack, which include Liskeard Athletic, Porthleven, Mousehole and Elburton Villa.

Millbrook travel to Penzance on Saturday, then face Wendron away on Monday, before completing their season at home to Plymouth Marjon on Friday, May 11.

Millbrook bounced back impressively from their first defeat in 16 games at Mousehole on Saturday with a confidence performance against St Blazey.

They swept into an 18th minute lead when Foster drove the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area after a goalmouth melee in which three goalbound shots were blocked.

Millbrook continued to be the dominant side and it took a goal-line clearance from Lewis Vooghts to prevent Tom Payne doubling the lead on the stroke of half-time.

St Blazey had a goal threat with Seb Broomfield and Lewis Coombes up front but they were given little space by a Millbrook back line brilliantly marshalled by skipper Tom Hall.

And the visitors got a vital second goal in the 65th minute with Foster again on target, this time from close range with a low shot which squirmed under St Blazey goalkeeper Toby Chapman over the line.

St Blazey were reduced to 10 men after 78 minutes when defender Vooghts, having been shown a yellow card for a foul, showed continual dissent to the referee, who was given no choice but to show him a second yellow and a red card.
