Tavistock clinched the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League title tonight with an emphatic 4-1 victory over rivals Bodmin Town at Langsford Park.
The result means Saltash United, who led the premier division table for much of the season, could yet pip Bodmin to the runners-up spot on Saturday with a win over Falmouth at Kimberley Stadium.
In tonight’s game, Tavistock never looked back after sweeping ahead after only 33 seconds, with Luke Brown finishing off a superb move with a 15 yard drive.
Bodmin went on to dominate possession for the rest of the first half but Tavistock defended superbly, and their goalkeeper Josh Oak didn’t have a save to make.
And when the excellent Jack Crago made it 2-0 six minutes before half-time, Bodmin were left with a mountain to climb.
Needing to win to keep their own title hopes alive, the visitors threw on striker Adam Carter two minutes into the second half. Their top scorer had not been deemed fit enough to start the game.
Bodmin continued to pour forward but they were leaving gaps at the back and they were caught out in the 62nd minute when their former player Glyn Hobbs curled in a superb shot to make it 3-0.
Carter gave Bodmin a glimpse of hope of a late revival by scoring a 77th minute penalty but Tavistock responded by going to the other end where Josh Grant finished off another sweeping move.
After the match Tavistock were presented with the trophy by league chairman Mark Hayman, who remarked on the fact that it is only three years since the club were relegated, having won only two games all season.
Manager Stuart Henderson, a former Saltash United first team coach, has done a remarkable job at Langsford Park.
