THE game of the day in the Western League Premier Division tomorrow afternoon involves St Blazey as the Green and Blacks head to fellow high-flyers Clevedon Town.
Cam Hutchison’s late winner at Tavistock last Saturday kept the Cornishmen’s unbeaten run – now at 12 games – going, while their hosts go into a huge afternoon looking for a response following a surprise 3-0 defeat at Somerset rivals Street in midweek.
Dan Hart’s Blazey were also in action – dispatching of fellow Duchy outfit Liskeard Athletic 4-0 at Blaise Park in the Les Phillips Cup, a fine result which set up another home date with Bovey Tracey.
Clevedon away is one of the league’s hardest fixtures, but if Blazey head back down the M5 with reward then it goes to show just how far they have come in a short space of time. A win would move them up to third ahead of Liskeard, still with three games in-hand, while Clevedon would be within two points.
Newquay’s back-to-back victories over Brixham and Shepton Mallet have moved the Peppermints into fifth, and with it in the final play-off place.
They welcome a Street side who will head to Mount Wise in buoyant mood having seen off Clevedon, but the Cornishmen have the added advantage of having had a week off following Tuesday night’s postponement at Torpoint Athletic in the Les Phillips Cup due to a lack of hot water at The Mill.
Both Liskeard and Torpoint have the day off, although their East Cornwall rivals Saltash United are in action as they look to reignite their campaign.
Some tough fixtures – including last weekend’s 2-1 reversal at home to Clevedon – haven’t helped, but they have dropped to 12th following four defeats in five.
However, they do have games in-hand on several sides above them and will fancy their chances of victory when they host second bottom Brislington (3pm).
Fixtures (3pm): Buckland Athletic v Sidmouth Town, Clevedon Town v St Blazey, Newquay v Street, Portishead Town v Bovey Tracey, Saltash United v Brislington, Shepton Mallet v Ivybridge Town, Wells City v Tavistock.
