CARADON's head coach, Keith Haynes, hailed the 'major progress' made by the Swimming club's youngsters in the first weekend of this year's Cornwall County Championships.

Said Haynes: 'Last year the club picked up four silver and two bronze medals at the distance events, and this year we have taken two golds, four silver and a bronze.

'There were significant time improvements from the swimmers and, in terms of their ability to structure their races, there has been major progress.

'This has been a really promising start to the this year's County Championships and I'm excited to see what the swimmers can produce over the remaining two weekends at the beginning of March.'

Olivia Wyman was the first of the team to step up to the blocks in the 800-metre freestyle and post a time of ten minutes, 38.54 seconds, while Alex Szuplewski finished in ten minutes, 12.38 seconds to claim the girls' 13 years' gold medal and fifth place in the Junior Championship.

Rebekah James and Esther Doleman both swam in the final heat and produced personal best (PB) times. Both girls also picked up silver medals, in the girls' Senior Championship and Junior Championship respectively.
