The second race of the new season attracted an excellent fleet of 30 dinghies to the start line for Saturday's race in Looe Bay.

When the action got under way 11 Mirrors started in a north-easterly breeze. Brothers Ollie and Archie Hawkins took an early lead which they extended as the race went on leaving the rest to battle for the other places.

Joe Jackman and Jack Sargent settled for second place while newcomers to the fleet Thomas and  George McLaren were happy to finish in third place.

The Enterprise race saw two in a row for the new pairing of Rob Libby and Brian Bowdler, who took top position in a fleet of eight boats.

Tonight (Friday) sees the club's annual general meeting. Hopefully as many members as possible will be in the clubhouse for this important occasion.

Spring Dinghy Handicap Series Race 8 of 8

The final race of the Torpoint Mosquito's spring handicap series began with a number of crews contesting the top places. Ron Carter and Vicky Carter (Laser 2000) and Jack Mann and Ron Goggin (Wanderer) – with equal points – were vying for first place. However, although finishing fifth and lower down the pecking order than usual,  the Carters pipped the Wanderer by one place to win the series.

The race unfolded in bright sunshine, an inconsistent breeze and a rapidly falling and extremely low tide. The lack of water made setting a course a bit of a challenge. With limited options for a beat, race officer Richard Richmond sent the fleet first up river to Ferry, across to St John's 1 then to First Yellow.

Rob Bellfield (Laser) had a premature start and had to re-cross the line. A wind shift saw the Wanderer with spinnaker flying lead the main fleet towards the first mark but it was overtaken by those that had stayed in the moorings and out of the current including Rob Bellfield (Laser), Steve Roberts and Ruby Pearce Casey (RS200) and Chris Rowsell (Enterprise).

The Wanderer fell further back after hitting the mark and taking a 360° penalty. Rob Bellfield led the fleet for most of the first lap but was overtaken by Roger Holman and Stefano Franzolini (Jolly Boat) as they entered the second lap.

The Jolly Boat held the lead throughout the second and third laps to finish first on the water and first on corrected times.  Rob Bellfield (Laser) was second and Rob Loader (Laser) took third place from Steve Roberts and Ruby Pearce-Casey on corrected times.

Further down the fleet in the Laser Radial, Peter Grzelinski got stuck just before the finish and lost a place on corrected times to Geoff Hall out in a club Feva. However Grzelinski's ninth place was good enough to give him third in the series.
