Caradon Ladies Badgers 0

Truro Juniors 4

The future of Caradon Hockey Club looks bright, having entered the newly-formed Cornwall Badgers League.

This provides a development route for younger players and those returning to hockey.

Caradon started strongly with much of the attacking play in the first quarter; Katie Jones in particular was finding space on the right wing and Caradon forwards Sadie Mullis, Ellen Spencer and Leah Jones worked tirelessly to press the opponents goal on a number of occasions.

The second quarter started in much the same way, with the Caradon midfield and forwards having by far the majority of the play. However, Truro Juniors remained calm and towards the end of the quarter started to press into the Caradon defensive half. A short corner to Truro just before half-time was well struck and unfortunately guided into the goal off Caradon defender Karen Dyer, making it 1-0.

The experience of the Truro side started to show in the second half, with the Caradon defence suddenly under much more pressure. Within five minutes of the restart, a Caradon foot in the D led to a Truro short corner which was well struck for their second goal. Caradon defence worked hard to keep the visitors at bay, with some well-timed tackles from the Gubbins sisters (Bryony and Maddie) and Georgia Hall.

Truro’s third goal came after confusion in the D and Truro struck into the bottom corner.

Truro’s final goal came with just a few minutes remaining after an early break at the short corner meant Caradon defence were down to four. Again a strong strike by the Truro side saw the ball go wide of outstretched keeper Louise Jones and into the corner of the goal.

The next Ladies Badgers fixture is tomorrow (Saturday) at Penryn, while the Men’s Badgers next play on Saturday, November 21, (1.30pm) at home to Penzance.
