SALTASH United made the most of their second chance, reaching Easter Monday's Westinsure Cornwall Senior Cup final with a 4-1 Wednesday night victory at Bodmin's Priory Park – but they were made to work harder than the final scoreline suggests.
It was an evening of frustration for the Ashes, who had taken a 23rd-minute lead through Aaron Cusack's 25-yard thunderbolt, only to struggle to find the back of the net again until their three goals in the last 13 minutes.
A blunder by goalkeeper Ben Elphick – who let in Justin Searle's innocuous low drive – even allowed a very average, at best, Porthleven side to equalise on 61 minutes.
Saltash continued to huff and puff until a needless challenge by Jamie Burr on Sam Hughes allowed substitute Johnny Morris to restore their advantage from the penalty spot.
Luke Doddridge added a third goal four minutes later, with substitute Marc Thorne following up on a Morris drive to complete the scoring in the second minute of stoppage-time.
