REGARDING the proposed use of speed cameras in the Saltash Tunnel: a few people have said that the scheme is nothing more than a 'cash cow' for the Government. Graham Dutnall (Cornish Times Letters, 24.08.07) appears to hold a similar view. My understanding is that the authorities are rightly endeavouring to reduce the possibility of a major accident in the tunnel, particularly now that road traffic has increased so much, together with a corresponding increase in irresponsible driving. A 30mph speed limit will only delay the fastest motorist by no more than two seconds. I think we can all afford that in the interest of better safety. Keeping within the speed limit will not cost us a penny, therefore no 'cash cow' for the Government. Many major accidents have occurred in road tunnels, most recently in the Gothard Tunnel in Switzerland. Following a head-on crash at speed, many people were killed and scores badly injured. The resultant fire, intense heat, smoke and nil visibility prevented anyone from getting near the scene. Just imagine the carnage and immense distress for the families concerned. Of course, the Saltash Tunnel is much shorter, however, all tunnel accidents have the same potential for disaster. To those who object to the proposed speed limits at Saltash, I would say 'think again' and don't just jump on the populist bandwagon. If there was a major accident in the tunnel caused by speeding, the same people who now object to speed limits would be the very first to say 'Why didn't "they" have a speed limit?!'
