A HOUSING charity in Cornwall says it has been overwhelmed by the generosity of people who have donated footwear to help those experiencing homelessness across the county.
Harbour Housing, based in St Austell, has been asking for donations of footwear, saying that for people experiencing homelessness something as simple as a comfortable pair of shoes can make an enormous difference to their health, wellbeing and dignity.
Jan Varney, a trustee with the charity, has been delighted by the response.
As well as being a trustee, Jan also volunteers alongside a podiatrist providing essential foot care for homeless people using the Cosgarne Hall facilities in St Austell as well as other Harbour Housing services,
Now, with winter approaching, the charity is appealing for warm coats.
A collection of coats will be made when Saltash play at home against St Blazey on Saturday, November 21, at the Kimberley Stadium.
Supporters are being encouraged to take along unwanted coats in good condition, which Harbour Housing will store and distribute to people in need throughout Cornwall.
A Harbour Housing spokesperson said: “The generosity of communities in Saltash, St Blazey and across Cornwall is remarkable. These are communities that consistently step forward to help others.
“A pair of shoes or a warm coat might seem a small gesture, but for someone facing homelessness, it can mean the world.”
Harbour Housing provides supported accommodation and outreach services to individuals who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness. The charity’s services are tailored to meet a wide range of needs – from helping people discharged from hospital with nowhere to go, to supporting women escaping domestic abuse and sexual violence.
The charity works closely with each person to deliver housing-related support that empowers them to move towards independent living and long-term recovery.
