Perhaps it was mere coincidence that the BBC was showing 'Walking with Dinosaurs' the very same week as the Conservative Party Conference, or was it someone having fun?
Be that as it may it did not need William Hague to compound the folly by announcing a return to 'Thatcherism'.
As any historian will confirm, when a defeated army no longer knows which way to go forward, it always retreats into a strategy which worked before. Unfortunately it is also true that such strategies seldom work the second time around.
This is because circumstances are always different and what worked then is not the answer now. So it is with so called 'Thatcherism'. When Mrs T came to power, the Trades Unions were too powerful. , there was waste in the Public Services and taxes were too high.
Following on from the winter of discontent and having the opportunity of fighting a Falklands War enabled her to achieve much in her first two terms of office, but things went downhill from there.
Today is much different, Trades Unions are very responsible and transformed as a political force. The Public Services are now beyond efficiency levels and need real investment. Taxes, together with inflation and interest rates are the lowest for decades. Does William Hague really think the country needs a dose of Thatcherism in today's climate or is it a pathetic attempt to rally his bedraggled troops to fight another election with defeat staring them in the face.
The fact is Conser-vatism has run its course. It has nothing more to offer except to the extreme right, and it will become a cult rather than a party offer a 'broad church'.
I cannot see how many of the current Tory MPs could sing up to Mr Hague's agenda and we shall se defections both to the right to the UKIP and to the left, possibly to the Liberal Democrats and even to Labour.
The BBC has shown less and less actual coverage of Political Party Conferences, except for major speeches. The parties always complain about their coverage as being too little or biased - the general public merely complain about the coverage - far too much !
