AN exciting opportunity has arisen for those with a passion for nature to reside in Looe island’s bell tent and assist Cornwall Wildlife Trust wardens with day to day management of the reserve and its visitors.

The role will requires a couple or two good friends who can commit to living and work closely together on the island for four months, working ten days on then four days off duty.

Describing the role, Cornwall Wildlife Trust said: “Looe Island is one of our key nature reserves. It is carefully managed by residential wardens who permanently live on the island. During the summer months members of the public can visit the island on organised boat trips. This exciting opportunity is for a couple or two good friends to reside in the island’s bell tent and assist the wardens with day to day management of the reserve and its visitors.”

They continue: “You get to volunteer for a fantastic charity; one that really helps local wildlife, people and the environment. This role will give you the opportunity to gain valuable conservation work experience.

“It offers the chance to learn what is involved in the daily running and wider management of an island nature reserve. There’s opportunity to develop communication skills with members of the public. You will have the chance to learn about the island’s main wildlife highlights such as gulls, cormorants, oystercatchers and seals.

“This role enables you to become fully immersed in living offshore, surrounded by wildlife and with few trappings of the modern, convenience lead world. Island life will teach you to carefully manage resources and to be well organised and self-sufficient.

“Above all you will be able to make a genuine contribution to wildlife conservation and awareness raising of this amazing nature reserve with the general public.”

Adding: “Overall island life is unpredictable and you should be willing to help with tasks as they occur, even with mundane jobs, respect wildlife and wild places and feel comfortable with talking to people.”
