A Stoke Climsland man will spend the next two months walking the length of Britain to help children gain a better education.

John Wilmut plans to hike from John o’Groats to Land’s End to support Christian Aid’s work improving educational opportunities in countries such as South Sudan.

As a retired educational development specialist, John says he has seen first-hand the impact that poverty can have on a child’s education – and the difference that Christian Aid is making.

John has already raised more than £10,000 for the charity’s work overseas; in 2012 he walked from Land’s End to John o’Groats, writing a book about his experiences. He plans to set off on his next walk on Wednesday and aims to cover 16.5 miles each day for 68 days, with 10 rest days.

‘This is my second – and probably my last! – attempt at a walk from end to end of mainland Britain,’ said John.

‘I will be walking alone, but I expect that some friends may join me for small sections of the walk. ‘Christian Aid and its partners aim to improve learning, enrich children’s lives and extend their opportunities – I think that’s something worth walking for.’
