THE protest against the proposed closure of St Neot Post Office was propelled a little further into the spotlight when villagers used a helicopter as part of their demonstrations.

Residents of the parish formed the words Save St Neot Post Office by carefully positioning themselves at the village's playing field.

In what was described by protesters as atrocious conditions, up to 200 people stood in the field for two hours waiting for a gap in the weather to enable the helicopter to fly.

Muriel and Andy Merrett-Jones from the Save St Neot Post Office group said: 'We want to show Post Office Ltd, on the one hand, the strength of feeling that there is against this proposed closure, which would rip the heart out of the centre of the village, and also to show Post Office Ltd a community in action.

'A very strong community praised by Princess Anne when she awarded us the Calor Best UK Community Village of the Decade award, in 2006.

'We would ask Post Office Ltd, to reconsider the closure of our post office, that would deprive an area of over 42 square miles of any post office services.'
