CORNWALL Air Ambulance is giving visitors the chance to experience what it is like to be a helicopter pilot when it opens its doors to the public this weekend.

The open day will take place at the Cornwall Air Ambulance headquarters at Trevithick Downs, Newquay, tomorrow (Saturday).

For the first time at an open day, visitors can have a go at hovering a helicopter using the latest VR (virtual reality) technology with guidance from Cornwall Air Ambulance pilot Captain Craig Webster.

As well as flying a virtual helicopter, there will be the opportunity to see inside the helicopter and look at the specialist equipment.

It is the charity’s first open day since it launched the New Heli Appeal, which seeks to bring a new generation helicopter to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by April 2020. Visitors will be able to buy tickets for the New Heli Grand Draw and see the winning prize, a BMW 118i Sport, up close.

The air ambulance open day will take place between 11am and 3pm with free entry, but donations will be welcome.
