Seventy years ago today the small village of East Taphouse was hit by the tragic death of a six-year-old evacuee. Ronald Birchmore, who had been billeted to the village from London, died when he ran into the road and was hit by an army truck.
His death was keenly felt – villagers packed Connon Church for his funeral service – but his grave was never marked with a headstone. Now his grave in the cemetery has been marked by church members and this week the headstone was dedicated to commemorate the anniversary.
