Trees planted in memory of soldiers who died during the First World War have been vandalised. A line of memorial trees was planted on Launceston Road in the 1920s before the town got its war memorial, but some of them were controversially removed last year as part of a new housing development. The new trees, which have now been vandalised, had only just been planted to replace those removed last year.

Callington Royal British Legion (RBL) chairman David Jones said he is 'absolutely fed up' with the whole situation.

'I thought we'd succeeded in getting them back up but obviously not,' he said.

'They have only been replanted for a month. Everyone at the club is fed up with it.'

The RBL had wanted metal railings put around the trees, like those on nearby South Hill Road, to stop incidents like this occurring, but this wasn't allowed by Cornwall Council.
