ONE of Liskeard’s oldest organisations may be under threat in its 90th year.

When long-serving Liskeard Old Cornwall Society president and secretary Duncan Paul Matthews stood down at the group’s recent AGM, nobody volunteered to take on the roles.

Mr Matthews said: ‘The Liskeard OCS has a working committee of ten persons, but without a nominee or volunteer to head them as president and secretary, so the future is in the balance in this their 90th year.’

Mr Matthews was forced to stand down after 14 years in office due to his wife Jennifer’s declining health. Vice president Geoff Brown also retired.

The Liskeard OCS has an Archive Room in Stuart House with an extensive collection of photographs and records of all businesses and burials in the town.

Inaugurated on October 26, 1928, it is believed to be one of Liskeard’s oldest organisations, second only to the National Farmers Union.

It’s one of 40 such societies throughout Cornwall.

Volunteers for the posts would be very welcome at the next gathering of the Liskeard OCS at 2.30pm on Friday, November 10 in the Long Room at Liskeard’s Public Hall. There will be an illustrated talk by Di Lawer on her collection of First World War postcards.

The Archive Room on the top floor of Stuart House is open most Wednesday for both family history research and other information about the town (contact Mrs Paula Arthur on 01579 344808).

OCS meetings are held in the Public Hall Long Room on the second Friday of each month (September to May) from 2.30pm with a variety of speakers on subjects of Cornish interest.

Information is available from Duncan Paul Matthews on 01579 208912.
