THE village of Herodsfoot will commemorate its status as one of the country's 'Thankful Villages' with a service on Sunday. None of the village's young men who served in the First World War died; they all returned home. The village is doubly thankful, as none of the men who served in the Second World War were lost. Herodsfoot is one of only 52 Thankful Villages in the UK, and the only one in Cornwall. The war memorial, where Sunday's commemoration will take place, lists those who served and returned. During the service, MP Sheryll Murray will unveil a 'Fortunate Village' plaque, a gift from the Thankful Villages motorcycle run which visited Herodsfoot in July 2013. The participants visited all 52 Thankful Villages over a period of two weeks, raising money for the Royal British Legion. The riders left all the villages with a Delabole slate plaque, with a request that they unveil the plaques on the Sunday closest to the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war. Herodsfoot will join the other Thankful Villages as it holds its service at 11am.
