The Winter Starter competition on Sunday, March 19 at St Austell saw children from all over the county taking part.

On a beautiful summer like day referee Eddie Wickett and his band of helpers (club members and parents) organised the children on the courts. In a relaxed atmosphere the children played in five separate box matches the results of which were: -

Girls - winner Debbie Flitney (Bodmin) aged 10; runner-up, Lucy Littlejohns (Launceston) aged 11.

Mixed event - Patrick Robins (Hayle) aged 7; r-up, Lydia Felton (Truro).

Boys - Liam McClary (Bodmin) aged nine; r-up, Adrian Pengelly (Looe) aged 14.

Boys - Jake Willcock (Bodmin) aged nine; r-up, Jack Hunkin (Mevagissey) aged eight.

Boys - Kristopher McCracken (Looe) aged 13; r-up, Michael Brenton (Lostwithiel) aged 12.

All the children received a certificate and the winners received medals. Jane McLoughlin, Starter tennis organiser, would like to thank Eddie and St Austell LTC for their help in running this successful event.

In a recent Inter County Matchplay Tournament, staged in Cornwall many of the County Training Players were in action. In the box events, Drew B, Jeremy Sinden beat Richard Redding (Avon) in finish second in the box.

Draw C had two Cornish Girls in Helen Wilson (Bodmin) and Karen Shepley (Looe) and they finished first and second respectively.

The final draw was made up of four Cornish girls. Rachel Hobbs (Bude) won both her matches, beating Zoe Lee (Hayle) and Rosanna Mowle-Clarke (Saltash).

Jade Curtis (Saltash) was beaten in her first match by Rosanna Mowle-Clarke but then went on to beat Zoe Lee in her final match.
