Stock Cars- attendance record smashed
The car attendance record for Formula Two Stock Cars at St Columb was smashed for the second time this season, as a new all-time high of 32 drivers contested a meeting which included an enthralling final, and three rollovers in the end of day Grand National.
Former World champion Dave Luscombe of Totnes enjoyed remarkable success with his brand new car. Racing it for the first time, Luscombe won the feature event.
Cornish drivers Richard James of St Stephen and Richard Hart of Cardinham won the heats, ahead of a victory in the consolation for Rob Farrell of Ipplepen, South Devon, who scored a heat and final double at the opening St Columb date four weeks ago.
Teenager Chris Rowe of Plymstock led beyond the half way point of the Final, and was ideally placed for his best ever result until spun late on. It was Bill Batten of Newton Abbot, making his first appearance since being injured on Good Friday, who spun the youngster. Batten was trying to catch Luscombe, but the delay he experienced with Rowe forced Batten to settle for second place, whilst Tim Farrell of Plymouth was third for the second St Columb meeting in a row.
Gavin Pike of Okehampton was the first to roll in the Grand National, after which Gilson Rowe of Plymstock and Launceston's Adrian Jasper performed a spectacular double rollover. When the race did finally go its full distance, Colin Higman of Menheniot took the his first win of the day to supplement his best blue top award.
Hot Rods - Numbers in the Hot Rods were disappointingly on the low side as the spate of heavy crashed over the Mayday Bank Holiday took its toll. However, each of the day's three races produced a different winner, as honours were shared about. Comeback stalwart Les Palmer of Plymouth was uncatchable in the first heat, and it was a similar story in heat two when Tyrone Snell of Penryn took the flag.
Palmer and Snell featured strongly in the main event, but whilst they spent time battling with one another, Don Stevens of Newquay was able to make good his getaway, and the Kellogs-sponsored local star took the victory. Neil Charles of St Blazey had a most disappointing afternoon, for his latest Hot Rod refused to run properly, and he was left with two non-finished, and one non-start.
Bangers Under 1600cc - World championship qualifying round - The trio of Banger race winners, Cornishman Mark Moon, Phil Powell of Taunton and final winner Danny Hunt of Newton Abbot each significantly boosted their World Championship points scores, to close the gap on leaders Shane Brown of Taunton and Steve Hunt of Newton Abbot, neither of whom hit the standards that have been reaching recently.
