ROYAL Mail has helped celebrate Captain Thomas Moore’s 100th birthday by installing a special postbox in his home town.
The’NHS blue’ postbox has been created in honour of Captain Tom’s incredible efforts to raise money for the NHS.
David Gold, director of Public Affairs and Policy at Royal Mail said: ’We wish Captain Thomas Moore a very happy 100th birthday. His achievements are truly phenomenal, and this is reflected in the affection shown for him across the world.’
A special postmark has also been issued to celebrate Captain Tom’s birthday and has been applied across all stamped mail this week.
Royal Mail’s South Midlands Mail Centre has had to adapt its sorting machines to deal with the large volume of birthday mail being sent to the enormously-loved 100 year old. A dedicated collection box has been set up and more than 100,000 cards for Captain Tom were received by earlier this week.
Captain Tom has become a symbol of hope and unity across the UK having now raised more than £29m for the NHS by walking laps of his garden. His initial fundraising target had been £1000.
