THE soccer players of Saltash United have sparked celebrations galore, as they have been soaking up the silverware during the past week or so.

Hot on the heels of United's first team winning the Durning Lawrence Cornwall charity cup by beating Falmouth Town 3-2 at Newquay, the second team have brought the George Evely cup back to Kimberley Stadium.

They triumphed, on Sunday, at Roche where they beat Truro 3-2. Both cup finals went to extra time, both finished with the same score, and both winning goals were scored in the second half of added time.

The first team, who play in the Jewson South West league were among 16 Cornish sides invited to contend for the Durning Lawrence Cornwall charity cup, held at the end of last week.

They took hold of the trophy after two goals were scored within a minute in the second half of extra time - these tucked away by Michael Preston and defender Nathan Blamey.

The teams had been taken into extra time because Newquay equalised with a penalty, only seconds before full time was up. Undaunted United's first team players went on to lift their first silverware for eight years.

The second team, who play in the Cornish Guardian East Cornwall league, won the George Evely cup for the first time.

This was despite the fact they went crashing to a two goal deficit within 25 minutes. The winner on this occasion, forced into the net from close range during the second half of added play, came from Carl Nickson.

While 16 teams from different leagues were invited to take part in the Durning Lawrence Cornwall charity cup, the George Evely cup final is contended between the winners of the East Cornwall league cup, which United have already claimed, and the cup winners from the Cornwall Combination league.

The joint managers of the first team are Mike Doel and Chris Wakeham, while the second team are managed by Eddie Shapland, with Steve Manuel as assistant.
