Dobwalls........................................2
St Columb Minor........................3
WITH the pitch barely playable both sides found it hard to play any flowing football. The visitors took the lead from a quickly taken free kick when the home defence were caught napping. A through ball to a lone attacker was put away to give the keeper no chance.
Dobwalls levelled when Martin Polatch latched onto a through ball from Martin Jordan. The same player gave the home side the lead when he headed home an Andros Andrew cross.
Dobwalls should have had the game sown up by half time, Simon Dann hit the bar and St Columb some how managed to scramble the ball clear in a goal mouth scramble.
In the second half Dobwalls dominated and squandered several easy chances to kill off the game.
St Columb capitalised on a couple of defensive errors to surprisingly take the lead.
For the last twenty minutes the visitors were camped in their own box with Dobwalls pressing for an equaliser. Andy Sheer mishit his shot with an open goal beckoning and Martin Polatch hit the post in the dying minutes.
Despite having the lions share of the play it just goes to show that if you don't take your chances you will not win games.
Martin Jordan received the Man of the Match award for a solid game in defence. Jefferys Estate agents sponsored the team.
Biscovey .........................................0
Callington Town......................0
WITH the recent bad weather it was nice to play on a good surface for a change. With both sides getting into their stride some good and attractive football was played.
All the clear cut chances fell to Callington in the first period. The influential Stuart Taylor had the first, his well struck volley from 14 yards just cleared the bar. Brooks was next, his 18 yard shot saved by the keeper.
Then a succession of corners kept Biscovey defence on their toes but to their credit they cleared their line well with half time approaching the best chance of the game fell to Callington following good work from Griffith. His cross was met by the head of Bradley whose header came off the under side of the cross bar which the keeper then gathered. Biscovey had their chances in the first half but were restricted to long range.
The second period started in the same fashion with Callington dominating for long periods. Taylor was running Biscovey ragged at times, with good work off the ball from Truscott and Bradley. With 30 minutes remaining new signing Warren Hennings (Ivybridge Town) was starting to feel the pace a bit and was replaced by another new signing Neil Kinger, who slotted in really well and made his presence felt straight away. Soon after Griffith made way for Peel as did Rowland for Farris. As Callington continued to press for the winner, Truscott had a couple of half chances.
Biscovey's best and only real chance came in the dying minutes. Old timer Geoff Paul screwed his shot from 10 yards wide with only the keeper to beat. So at the final whistle it remained 0-0. Manager Paul Blatchford said that there were some good individual performances and our second clean sheet in a row. "But we must start taking our chances and start scoring goals again". Star Man - Stuart Taylor.
Godolphin......................................2
Lanreath........................................2
WITH two players unavailable and Richard Rule out because of a car accident, Lanreath knew they would have a fight on their hands against high riding Godolphin.
Lanreath didn't start well and went a goal down within two minutes after two defenders got in each other's way and gave the ball to Ben Chapmon who went on to score from 10 yards.
Godolphin continued to push forward putting Lanreath in all sorts of trouble as they tried to find their shape. After 15 minutes and on their first attack Lanreath got a penalty for hand ball. Andy Collins stepping forward to take the kick but only managed to kick it at the keeper who saved with his legs. This seemed to kick start Lanreath who had the best of the next 30 minutes in this end to end game.
Godolphin started the second half as they did the first, but this time the Lanreath defence held strong. After 10 minutes Lanreath brought on Luke Rooker who gave far more balance. With Godolphin pushing forward to find the second goal they left a big gap at the back for Andy Collins to run through and score under the advancing keeper.
Within five minutes Godolphin were back in front with a disputed penalty which Ian Sennington scored.
Lanreath never lost their heads and 10 minutes later Matt Barton scored with a shot from 20 yards which was deflected on the way giving the keeper no chance.
The last 15 minutes saw end to end football with both teams trying to find the winner. This was a highly entertaining game with both teams having chances with Lanreath having the best of the game but throwing it away with a silly goal at the start of the game.
Division One
Pensilva...........................................3
St. Minver........................................0
ON a unusually sunny afternoon, Pensilva were able to play at home for the first time for nearly two months. In their previous encounter with St.Minver, Pens were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline. However, the return fixture was a different story.
The first half saw the home side miss several chances. Colin Swinburnes thumping shot from 15 yards was tipped over the bar. James Page had several attempts at the target as did Jonny Firth and Darren Worden. But it was in the last minute of the half that Pens scored the vital first goal. Youngster Colin Wilson was brought down in the penalty box but controversially the free kick was given outside the area. Ideally suited for a left footer, up stepped Marc Tuck who curled the ball "Beckham like" around the wall and into the top corner.
A 10 minute down-pour at the start of the second half made conditions a little sticky and seemed to unsettle both sides (and those spectators who couldn't keep their feet, Dan Hoskins!). But, Darren Worden was able to keep his feet as he 'stole' the ball from the St. Minver defence and unleashed a venomous and unstoppable drive from 25 yards to make it 2-0.
Some excellent handling from keeper Rich "Rev" Rendle and a solid back four of D.Hicks, P.Dunbobbin, N.Hicks and R.Swinburne gave the visitors little chance. The game was finally sealed when a five man move, started in Pensilva`s corner, resulted in Marc Tuck side footing in from eight yards. Man of the Match was awarded to Paul Dunbobbin for some goal saving defending.
Division Two
Honours shared
St Stephens.....................................1
St Cleer............................................1
Saints travelled to top table rivals St Stephens. in what proved to be an even contest. Both sides will feel that they should have taken all three points, with St Cleer's away point more of a gain than St Stephens two dropped home points.
On a pitch which started off soft, but quickly turned heavy as a result of a couple of downpours both teams battled for territorial advantage, with no quarter given. However it was the visitors who created the most in the first period going close on several occasions, especially from the exceptional corners being taken by Taylor on the right.
The last ten minutes of the half however belong to Woolfe who turned from hero to villain the space of five minutes, firstly with a clearing header when for once Duffey was beaten and then with a reckless tackle which appear worse than it was to give away a penalty which St Stephens failed to convert. Justice was seen to be done
With a change of formation in the second half Saints began pounding the home defence and stepped up the pressure on the St Stephens goal going close time and time again but not gaining the score which their play and pressure deserved. As is the case on these occasions one of the few times the home team threatened resulted in them getting their noses in front with 19 minutes to go when a missed tackle and failure to close down tight enabled the ball to be threaded along the byeline for a simple tap in.
St Cleer finding themselves behind against the run of play pressed all the more but with time running out the omens did not look good until a shot on goal after a corner was cleared to the edge of the box where Moon (on for his cameo part), hit home his first goal for Saints when he buried the ball into the left hand corner through a ruck of players with five minutes to go. Although battling to the end St Cleer were unable to breakdown the St Stephens defence again and honours were shared.
The win however did put Saints on top of the pile above their weekend opponents with Godolphin, who did not play, in third.
Division Three
Dan's the man
Bodmin Athletic.........................1
Tideford...........................................3
THIS game was moved to Tideford as Bodmin's ground was unfit so all credit to chairman Stewart Masters for getting the pitch ready at very short notice. Bodmin had the better of the early exchanges and it was somewhat against the run of play when Dan Taylor put Tideford into the lead after 15 minutes.
It was a solo effort by Dan, having beaten two defenders getting into the box, he was first to his feet following a good challenge to slip the ball in from a narrow angle. This motivated Tideford and they were the better team for the remainder of the half, but could not increase the lead, despite twice having the ball in the net only to be adjudged offside.
It was Dan Taylor again who increased Tideford's lead early in the second period when he won a couple of 50:50 tackles, including that of the keeper, to tap into an empty net. It was then the turn of John Williams to net for Tideford to take the tally to three, when he was the one in place to finish a goalmouth scramble in which several players were involved.
Tideford could have had a couple more but for some good stops by the Bodmin goalie, but as the game wore on some lengthy injury stoppages seemed to stagnate the game. With Bodmin down to 10 men and Tideford three nil up, complacency allowed Bodmin to put one back through Barry Doidge, much like Tideford's second, having won tackles to tap into an empty net. Another effort then scraped the outside of the Tideford post, but that was the end of any come back for Bodmin, and the score ended three one to Tideford.
Division Four
POLPERRO RES..............................8
DELABOLE RES..............................1
POLPERRO started this game as strong favourites to win, but were met by strong resistance from an improved Delabole side.
Despite losing the toss and having to play uphill into the sun (yes sun!) Polperroo started well with some good attacking moves on the less than perfect surface.
The home side were rewarded with the opening goal after 10 minutes when Aaron Spry capped a strong individual run with a shot past the advancing 'keeper.
A second goal followed midway through the half when full back Jordan Whalley cut in from the right and hit a brilliant shot against the post which rebounded off the keeper and into the net.
It was not, however, all one-way traffic and Delabole pulled a goal back soon after as a result of uncharacteristically sloppy defending. The home side's response was swift though, and they broke upfield and took a 3-1 lead through Jon Pengelly.
Strong words at half-time from manager Martin Hamlet woke Polperro up and they turned in a better performance further increasing their lead through a Matt King penalty.
Rob Bilsborough capped an impressive return with a deft chip over the 'keeper and further goals from King, Whaley and Mark Pengelly saw Polperro put the result beyond doubt.
Manager Martin Hamlet then brought himself off the bench to steal the glory with a long range effort after good work by Pengelly. The game saw some good individual performances from Bilsborough. Spry and Pengelly but the man of the match went to Polperro's find of the season, right back Jordan Whaley.
This wasn't Polperro's best performance but they will be pleased to have scored eight goals on a difficult surface despite never really getting out of first gear.
