SALTASH PE teacher Bob Brown has completed his epic coast-to-coast kick scooter challenge across Australia in just 31 days, four hours and 10 minutes – but his extraordinary journey ended with a dramatic crash.

The 57-year-old Bishop Cornish Church of England Primary School teacher travelled around 2,800 miles from Perth to Sydney on a non-electric kick scooter, aiming to break two world records.

Bob is now waiting to hear whether Guinness World Records will officially recognise his achievements.

He had already described the challenge as “brutal”, but the final kilometres proved just as punishing. With only around 20km remaining, Bob suffered a serious crash when his handlebars broke while he was travelling down a steep descent.

Despite the setback, he completed the challenge and crossed the country in a time of 31 days, four hours and 10 minutes.

After reaching the finish, Bob thanked everyone who had supported him throughout the gruelling journey.

“Thank you to everyone for your support,” he said. “I’m trying to get some rest now and try and put on the 12kg I lost.”

Bob’s challenge was not simply about setting records. He wanted to inspire others to believe that they can achieve more than they might think possible.

“The message from this challenge is we are all more capable than we think,” he said. “Aim high, chase your dreams – you never know where it might lead.”

Bob set off from Perth on July 16 with two ambitious targets: to become the fastest person to cross Australia on a kick scooter and to become the first person to complete the coast-to-coast journey using three different self-powered methods.

The journey was the latest chapter in his remarkable relationship with Australia and a personal endurance story stretching back more than two decades.

Bob was the first Briton to run across Australia in 2001, completing the journey in 61 days while averaging around 50 miles a day. Over 20 years later, he became the first person to cross Australia by two different methods under his own steam – running and cycling.

Unable to run anymore because of his back, Bob began considering another Australian adventure and discovered the possibility of crossing the country on a kick scooter.

His latest achievement means he has now completed the coast-to-coast journey by running, cycling and scootering, regardless of whether Guinness confirms the record.

His love affair with Australia began during a gap year in 1991, when he lived in Sydney before moving towards Queensland. For several years, he split his time between England and Australia, completing triathlons in Britain during the summer and training in Australia during the winter.

Now, after thousands of kilometres, countless hours of scooting and a final-day crash, Bob’s incredible Australian adventure is complete.

Supporters can still back the fundraising campaign, which has helped provide extra motivation as Bob battled heat, exhaustion, injuries and the relentless demands of the road throughout.

He is now awaiting the official verdict on the two world records – and has asked supporters to give his fundraising campaign one final boost.
