Devon and Cornwall Police have pledged support to this year’s Safer Internet Day.
The day, which is organised by the UK’s Safer Internet Centre, takes place today, February 9. This year’s day is about reducing intolerance and hate online and making the internet a better place.
Sgt Steve Shepherd, a serving office with the force, is seconded to the UK Safer Internet Centre and is integral in delivering online safety briefings to schools throughout the UK. He acts as the law enforcement link to professionals who use the Safer Internet Centre’s helpline.
Sgt Shepherd said: ’We are using the day to inspire respectful use of the internet, and help raise awareness about the issue of online hate. The internet is a great place but it is also a place that can lead to abuse and bullying. We want to encourage everyone to think before they post and make the internet a safer place for everyone.’
Safety and advice, along with a number of videos, are available to view and share from the website.
This year supporters are also encouraged to get involved in the #share a heart social media campaign to help inspire kindness online.
