Sunday saw the first playing of the Topan Challenge, which is destined to be a regular fixture for the Liskeard-Looe club. The Topan team was made up from former and existing Topan employees, who played a Liskeard-Looe 'Baa-Baas' select team. An open match played in festive spirit was won by the Baa Baas 17-5. It was also agreed by all concerned that the money raised at the match should go to the Asian tsunami appeal and the magnificent total of just over £1,000 was collected. The crowd was in good spirits and were very generous. They were given the privilege of watching a good game of rugby between two enthusiastic teams. Topan started strongly and held the Baa Baas for a while. But despite some strong defensive play by Topan it was only a matter of time before the experienced Baa Baas scored. The Baa Baas ran in the first of their three tries, all scored by Tom Gillbard – only one of which was converted. Topan replied late in the second half when Wayne Topan ran over to prevent the whitewash. At the end of the game there was the ceremonial dumping of the match official into a very large muddy puddle. Unfortunately two players were injured during the game. Campbell hurt his shoulder but hopefully will not be out for long while Tony Elliot, as well as sponsoring the day, ended up with a trip to Derriford with a damaged neck. Everyone wishes him a speedy recovery. The important part of the day then kicked into gear with some serious fundraising taking place. Programme sales and raffles, including that of a cake donated by a rugby mum, raised a total of over £1,010. The club would like to particularly thank Tony Elliot from Topan and Steve Beresford from Kitzkatz Printshop for their support on the day.
