ISAAC Clayton, a talented young pole vaulter, has been awarded a grant of £125 to help with coaching, travel, subsistence and accommodation costs in his chosen sport. The grant is the result of a partnership between SportsAid South West, the Charity for Sport and the Rotary Club of Looe Valley, and the presentation to Isaac was made by club president Peter Bartram at The Hannafore Point Hotel on Monday. There are many talented local sportsmen, both able and disabled who have the potential to make it to the top of their sport but who often face extensive financial costs. Rotary nationally, is always seeking to support the achievements by young people and considers such grants to be an excellent way to assist talented sportsperople in club's own localities to fulfil their dreams. Isaac (17), who is living at Pelynt, is ranked number two in the pole vault in the South Western Counties at youth level and was placed second in the South West regional schools in 2004. He hopes to do well in the English Schools this year and to compete for a National League team in the longer term. SportsAid South West is a charity working to help talented young sportspersons between the ages 11 and 18 to compete at the highest levels in their chosen sport. The young people supported do not receive National Lottery money. At the same Rotary presentation, Robert Bennett received the Silver Salver Vocational Award in recognition of his long service to Looe as street sweeper. Rotarians said Robert's job was often a thankless task and he was very deserving of the award. Rob was also the recipient of a long-service award by Caradon council in 2004 after completing 30 years' service.
