In the Cornish Times newsroom we’ve again been busy producing three editions of your favourite local paper packed with news: the main edition, and the recently launched Saltash and Bodmin editions.
The main edition leads with the story of how the effects of climate change have been brought into sharp focus in South East Cornwall as a result of a local businessman applying to rebuild a home that has stood for decades on the seafront at Plaidy, Looe. Cornwall Council is saying that the plan should be refused due to the threat of rising sea levels.
Inside we also feature pages of colourful pictures from Liskeard’s Nadelik Lyskerrys (Christmas in Liskeard in Cornish) lights up event, as well as from the Rame Peninsula with Torpoint’s special Christmas event and Kingsand and Cawsand’s festive lanterns procession. We also talk to a lifeboat volunteer in Looe who is undergoing training at just 18 years of age.
The Saltash edition leads with the good news that the wraps have come off the town’s former ‘eyesore’ railway station building, revealing a beautifully restored and attractively painted structure that should be open to the public early next year.
Inside we also have town residents’ reaction to the news that due to ‘elf and safety’, Santa’s sleigh won’t be part of the Saltash Christmas procession this year – though the ‘man in red’ will still be in attendance. We also hear about a mock election held by students at Saltash Community School prior to the real thing on Thursday of next week.
The Bodmin edition leads with further details of the Tour of Britain stage through Cornwall that is due to take place next September, and which will see the star cyclists taking part starting in Penzance and ending in Bodmin.
We also have pictures and a report on Bodmin College students’ recent trip to Vouziers in France, where they have been learning about the French way of life and culture as well as undertaking excursions related to a project about the environmental problems of plastics.
In all editions we also have words from each of the South East Cornwall general election candidates to help you make up your minds about where you will place your cross on Thursday’s election voting papers. We also preview a striking art installation featuring 40,000 individual figures that is to be set up tomorrow (Saturday) in a South East Cornwall’s main street by service personnel charity Help for Heroes to raise awareness of issues with the military discharge process.
Other stories include a St Dominick village stalwart who is celebrating his 100th birthday, and our Antiques section features a cane that belonged to a controversial survivor of the sinking of the Titanic that is due to be auctioned in South East Cornwall.
This week’s editions also have lots of Countdown to Christmas special features, including messages from the Bishops of Truro and Plymouth and other priests and ministers of various denominations around South East Cornwall. It also features special forthcoming Christmas events, and features charitable appeals from the Samaritans, The Salvation Army and the Santas on Bikes events helping to raise hospice funds.
Our Farming and Equestrian section also includes a round-up on the work done by the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) to help farming families in need.
We also have lots of your community news and pictures and regular columns such as Ray Roberts’ Nature Watch, your Letters, TV Choice and the latest festive-themed Books - including one by celebrity couple Emma Thompson and Greg Wise.
This week’s editions also have Farming, Leisure, Property and Motoring sections.
There are also 11 pages of Sport with content tailored to the three editions.
Find all of this and more in this week’s Cornish Times editions, in shops from today (Friday).
