PUPILS from a Plymouth school have been supporting the RNLI in South East Cornwall.
A nautical day at Tor Bridge Primary School in Estover raised £127.55 for Looe RNLI Lifeboat Station.
Since March, Graham Morris and the visits team at Looe Lifeboat Station have hosted 14 schools, Austrian students, sea scouts, young farmers and adult groups at the station. Graham has also visited 13 schools to speak about the RNLI.
While preparing for a visit from Graham, children at Tor Bridge Primary School made a donation in return for dressing up in costumes matching a sea-related theme. Then, during Graham’s ‘be safe, have fun!’ water safety talk to the pupils, Sienna and Riley presented him with the school’s fundraising cheque. Graham thanked the children, telling them the money will be used for training volunteer crews.
During the events run by Graham and the visits team at Looe Lifeboat Station, 1,051 children under 11, 604 11 to 18 year-olds and 184 adults have participated in Water Smart ‘be safe, have fun!’ water safety talks.
These have involved learning four key skills: 1, stop and think; 2, stay together; 3, float; and 4, call 999 or 112.
Graham says that working with these groups is a vital and enjoyable way of getting water safety messages across.
