Local businesses in one of South East Cornwall’s busiest tourist spots are being asked to pledge £6,000 to help in the battle to keep open a public toilet. And if successful, users will be asked to stump up 20p before they can spend a penny. The Quay toilets in Polperro are under threat of closure by Cornwall Council as part of their cost-cutting measures. The village’s community council has already taken on the running of the other two facilities at Crumplehorn and Fishna Bridge through the parish precept, but David Pengelly, chairman, says there is a limit to how much they can ask local people to pay. A Polperro-wide action group, which includes the Community Council, Harbour Trust, Promotional Group, Cornwall Council and individual businesses, is trying to find a way of keeping all four of the parish toilets open, including the nearby facility at Talland Bay.
