THE European Union referendum campaign has had a dose of pasty power.

The Cornish Pasty Association (CPA), which represents makers in Cornwall, said it backed a vote to stay because of the protection the product receives under EU law with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status.

The pasty industry is worth more than £65 million annually to the Cornish economy.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage said he was a fan of the pasty but harboured suspicions that any firm or body which backed Remain might have a vested interest or ulterior motives.
