‘How to make your votes really matter’ is the theme of an event on Friday.
The current first-past-the-post election system in the UK is grossly unfair, says the organisation Make Votes Matter - and has led to the chaos and stalemate situation over Brexit.
Cath Willoughby works for the Cornwall branch of Make Votes Matter.
She says that in Cornwall, the relative majority system means that all six of the county’s MPs are Conservative, despite the fact that less than half of the votes cast by voters actually went to the Conservative Party at the last election (48%). A similar thing happened in 2010, but the results favoured the Lib Dems, she adds.
‘We have lived with a false majority government - e.g. one which most people did not vote for - during every government since 1935, with the exception of the coalition in 2010,’ said Cath.
Almost every other country in the developed world has moved to some kind of proportional system - where seats match votes.
Friday’s event from 7pm at the Eliot House Hotel in Liskeard will be the chance to hear from Make Votes Matter about why they think it is time the UK changed the system.
Representatives from local political parties will be there to discuss and share ideas from local people.
Also speaking at the event will be Liskeard campaigner Thomas Conner. Thomas is fighting to prove his belief that the current electoral system infringes a human right, and has submitted a case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
