POLICE have issued a warning to residents in Callington after a number of fires were reportedly deliberately started on land behind Tesco during the current hot and dry weather.

Officers from Callington Police say they have visited the area and seen the extent of the damage caused, with concerns that the dry conditions could allow fires to spread rapidly.

The warning comes as grass, vegetation and ground conditions remain extremely dry following a prolonged period of limited rainfall.

Police are urging people not to light fires, warning that even a small flame could quickly become dangerous.

The area affected is close to businesses, homes and locations regularly used by members of the public, meaning any uncontrolled fire could put people, property and wildlife at risk.

A statement from Callington Police said: “Please don’t light fires – especially during this hot, dry weather.

“We’ve recently been made aware of fires being deliberately lit on land behind Tesco. We’ve visited the area and seen the extent of the damage.

“With so little rain recently, the ground and vegetation are extremely dry, meaning even a small fire can spread very quickly.”

Officers said that what may appear to some as harmless behaviour could have serious consequences, including putting lives at risk, causing damage and placing extra pressure on emergency services.

They also warned that deliberately starting fires is a serious criminal offence.

Police are asking residents to help keep the community safe by reporting anyone seen starting fires.

Anyone who witnesses a fire being started, or notices a fire that is spreading, should call 999 immediately.

The force thanked the public for helping protect the local area and urged people to enjoy the warm weather responsibly.

The warning follows a period of increased fire risk across Cornwall, with dry vegetation creating challenging conditions for firefighters dealing with outdoor fires.
