Plans for a new heliport in Penzance which would provide a helicopter service to the Isles of Scilly have been updated with backers hoping for a decision soon on whether they can go ahead, writes Richard Whitehouse, local democracy reporter.

A planning application from Robert Dorrien-Smith for a new heliport to be developed at Eastern Green in Penzance was first submitted to Cornwall Council in October 2016 and was given planning permission in March 2017.

However a judicial review launched by Isles of Scilly Steamship Company was allowed and the planning permission was quashed.

Since then the Steamship Company has announced plans to launch its own helicopter service which will operate from Land’s End Airport and is due to start this month.

The plans for the Penzance Heliport are still ongoing and Cornwall Council has now been provided with additional information for the planning application.

Under its plans the helicopter service would operate year-round and would fly to Tresco and St Mary’s. It would be operated by Sloane Helicopters and hopes to launch in 2019.
