A PUBLIC consultation evening is being held in Looe on Thursday (November 5) over the second phase of a large development in the town.

A decision on whether to approve Barratt Homes’ plan to build 85 further houses at its site off St Martin’s Road in East Looe was due to have been made in May, but was deferred by Cornwall Council to allow discussions on drainage and land stability to take place.

Now a reserved matters application has been submitted to the local authority with updated plans.

This includes a modified strategy for dealing with surface water run-off and the number of homes being proposed has also been reduced to 82.

Some Looe residents have called for a pause in any further decision-making on development at the site until after the conclusion of a coroner’s inquest into the death of Susan Norman, who died during a landslide in March 2013.

One resident of St Martin’s Road said: ‘The developer is advertising the homes in phase two for sale already, but they haven’t got the necessary approval.

‘We’re really shocked, because we were under the impression that nothing would happen until after the inquest. It’s a bit disrespectful.’

Members of the public have until next Friday (November 6) to view the plans and submit their comments to Cornwall Council by visiting the council’s planning website and searching for PA14/10838.

Questions

The town council will host Thursday’s public consultation at 7pm in the Council Chamber, East Looe.

A Cornwall Council planning officer will be present, as well as a representative of Barratt Homes, said Looe mayor Armand Toms.

He added that the meeting would be the chance for residents to ‘put their questions and have them answered’.

It is likely that the application will come before Cornwall’s East planning committee again for a decision at the start of December, said the Looe Strategy Group.
