PENSILVA.........................................7

ST TEATH.........................................0

With last season's manager, John Miller, stepping back because of an increase in work commitments to that of assistant manager, new manager Spencer Welsh, got off to a cracking start. With nine of last season's team remaining, it soon became apparent that the new members were as good if not better than those players that have moved on.

Pensilva soon settled and when the marking of St Teath's danger man Mark Hikson was sorted out Pensilva found themselves in control. Excellent play by the midfield and tireless running by forwards Martin Mote and Colin Wilson started to create chances. Young Colin Wilson showed great strength and ability in running passed three defenders to drive the ball home from 10 yards giving Pensilva the lead at half time.

From the start Pensilva totally dominated the game, Lee Caers scored the goal of the game on 50 minutes drifting passed three defenders to slot the ball passed the approaching keeper. Goal number three came from a corner headed in by Pete Collings from a distance of two yards.

Darren Worden came on at half time and after only 20 minutes he had driven home his first of the season. This was quickly followed by his second, and he completed his hat trick from the penalty spot.

Two young players, Dave Brown and Sam Tyler, were introduced during the game and made important contributions. Dave Brown scoring the seventh goal of the game.

Manager Spencer Welsh was full of praise of praise for his players after an outstanding team performance. He was quoted as saying "This was the start to season I dreamt about."

RAF ST MAWGAN..........................2

ST CLEER.........................................4

ST Cleer started their 2000/2001 season in League two with a tough away match against RAF St Mawgan at St Eval. On a hot humid day even getting the match underway proved eventful, when after negotiating the holiday traffic the match was delayed by the non-appearance of the appointed referee, which meant a half each in the middle for both managers.

Saints after a satisfactory pre-season soon got in to their stride and passing the ball around with confidence created a couple of chances before a long pass from Taylor found Collins, (who continued to torment the home defence all match), on the left and his low cross in to the centre was turned in by Harvey coming in from the right. And this was after only six minutes on the clock. Saints dominance in midfield and the speed of Harvey and Andrews on the right was causing the home defence several problems, with Truckle, Taylor and Gubbin supporting well from the middle of the pack.

St Mawgan found the Saints back three of, Hockin, Hill and Woolfe in defiant mood and with Roberts a commanding figure in goal and Wall impressive on the left, had little change from their furies in to the visitors half.

The second half started just the way Saints wanted when a high ball into the area which was not taken by the keeper under pressure from Harvey fell loose for Truckle to prod home.

A through ball out of midfield saw Harvey's pace beat a defender and the oncoming keeper to the ball and slipped it passed into an unguarded net. St Mawgan kept pressing and went close on a couple of occasions before finally getting one back when Archer slipped his marker and slotted the ball passed Roberts.

The game kept up a pace until with 10 minutes to go Saints increased their lead when Collin off a defender rifled into the top of the net. This should have meant game over but from the restart, Clark was allowed to waltz through to the edge of the box before a mix-up ended with the ball trickling in to the net.

CALLINGTON..................................3

DOBWALLS......................................5

DOBWALLS travelled to near rivals Callington for their first league match of the new season. As expected the local derby produced a keenly contested encounter.

The home side went ahead when a ball over the top found a player who looked to be offside, however the flag stayed down and the greatful striker made no mistake.

Almost from the restart Mark Fielder rose above the rest to head home from a corner kick. The visitors took command and went ahead when new signing Tony Rogers beat the home keeper with a well hit shot.

Skipper Robin Cole made it three when he charged down the keepers attempted clearance. On the half hour Martin Palatch was put through by Rogers to extend the lead. Callington reduced the arrears when a well taken free kick was chested on by Chris Truscott for his brother Tony to tap home.

The second half produced more of the same with Callington pushing men forward and Dobwalls counter attacking. Within the first ten minutes Dobwalls could have scored at least three goals with Rogers just firing wide and the home keeper making a couple of point blank saves.

A long throw in by Gary Isbell was flicked on for Martin Palatch to make it five. Not long after Nick Peel scored from the penalty spot at the second attempt to give his side hope. The first one was brilliantly saved by Nick Carpenter from Trevor Griffiths but had to be retaken as the referee had blown his whistle to talk to a player.

Despite a frantic last 15 minutes the scores remained the same. For Dobwalls the whole team showed grit and determination in what was a stern test of their ability and should give them a boost for the games to come.

CALLINGTON TOWN....................3

ST TEATH.........................................1

A first half hat trick from striker Chris Truscott was enough to ensure victory for Callington over the new boys in the Duchy Premier League in front of a good crowd at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday afternoon.

Sporting new kits, both sides settled quickly on a good playing surface but soon Callington were in control and took the lead inside three minutes. Andrew Striplin and Stuart Taylor combined before finding Chris Truscott who, unrecognisable to many having had is characteristic long hair shawn during the summer, fired home.

Seven minutes later and Callington were apparently cruising as Chris ran clear before calmly firing past the keeper for his and Town's second.

But the visitors proved to be no pushovers as they fought back and reduced the arrears on 13 minutes when Dale Sparrow chipped stand in keeper Paul Blatchford after an uncharacteristic slip up by the Town defence.

Callington were soon back in control and but for some great saves from the Saints keeper Trevor Prophet, but on the stroke of half time, Trefor Griffith set Truscott free and he calmly beat the keeper again to complete his hat trick and the scoring. The striker almost added a fourth mid way through the second period but Prophet denied him but the Town manager was happy to settle for the three points to start the season off in the right way.
