A century for Sam Pengelly proved to be the difference for Launceston in Thursday’s Horizon Home Improvements sponsored Isaac Foot Cup game against Duloe. Launceston captain Phil Spry won the toss and chose to bat.
With the score 48-3 off six overs. Spry joined Pengelly and held up an end whilst playing himself in, taking 17 deliveries to get off the mark, then made a run-a-ball 19 (34) before being bowled by Ed Coley in the 20th over.
But the innings was dominated by Pengelly He came to the crease at the beginning of the third over and never dropped his scoring rate below a run a ball.
Pengelly’s 50 came off 30 balls, his 100 off 52 and he was not out on 117 (59 balls) in Launceston’s 177 for 4.
Duloe got off to a good start in reply and continued to mirror Launceston’s innings until the 11th over when David Sillifant was introduced to the bowling and Chris Goldthorpe offered a catch to that man Pengelly.
Goldthorpe had scored 34 off 37 deliveries. At that point Duloe were 85 for 3, just three runs behind Launceston’s total in the first innings. Whereas Pengelly had been able to press on, unfortunately Duloe’s innings unravelled and they were all out in the 16th over for 109.
Launceston won 68 runs to become the second team into the semi-finals.
