Motorists will be able to park for free over the festive period.

Shoppers in South East Cornwall will not have to pay and display in car parks owned by Caradon District Council.

Cllr Edwina Hannaford, Caradon's economic development and leisure portfolio holder, said: 'The free parking encourages people to do their Christmas shopping locally, which benefits communities, businesses and the environment.

'Buying local is a great habit to get into, and the run-up to Christmas is the perfect time to explore South East Cornwall's terrific range of highly-

individual shops and businesses.'

In Gunnislake, Liskeard, Millbrook and Torpoint, free parking will be available every day from December 19 to 24. People in Looe can take advantage of free parking on December 13 and every day from December 20 to 24.

In Callington, parking will be free on December 6 and 8 and every day from December 21 to 24.

Shoppers in Saltash will enjoy free parking on December 18 and 19 and every day from December 21 to 24.

Notices about the free parking will be displayed in the car parks next to the pay and display machines on the free parking days.

Meanwhile, Caradon has reported that reduced car parking charges have boosted the local economy.

In July 2007, the council reduced its car parking charges to 10p for the first hour and 5p for the first hour for Caradon Residents' Parking Card holders.

Cllr John Turner, Caradon's leader, confirmed that traders in the area were behind the measure and that there are now fewer empty shops in local towns than a year ago.

However, Conservative group leader, Brian Galipeau, said: 'The plus points in the report are very thin, and either subjective, or impossible to attribute to the effects of 10p parking.'
